Milan
D. Croata, born on May 26, 1955 in Croatia, received his BA degree
from Zagreb Art College in 1977. Milan specialized in mosaics
(wood, ceramic, glass), painting, wood carving and restoration.
Before emigrating to Ithaca, New York, in March 1982, Milan was a
backdrop artist for Television Zagreb. He also exhibited his artwork
in Europe and won first and second prizes at European competitions.
After he and his wife, Victoria M.
Stiles, moved to Freeville in 1982, Milan started his own
construction business, "Gallery Croatia." In
addition to building, restoring, and creating commissioned mosaics,
painted murals and special effect painting (marbling, wood-graining,
gold-leafing), he exhibited his artwork in Ithaca, Binghamton, and
Syracuse. In the spring of 1993, Milan and friends
purchased a run-down building at 2-4 Main Street in Freeville.
After years of intermittent work with his construction crew, Milan
and Victoria opened "Tile-Tec International," a retail and
design center which specializes in flooring and interior designs
(especially bathrooms and kitchens). Besides continuing his work as
an artist, his interests have expanded into stone fabrication at his
stone-workshop on fall Creek Road, located close to the store. |
